The success of the Haitian Revolution had enduring effects on shaking the institution of slavery throughout the New World.

Martelly offers a fresh start against the old failed system .

By Joseph Guyler Delva
PORT-AU-PRINCE (Reuters) - Most Haitians refer to popular singer and presidential contender Michel Martelly as simply "Mickey". His rival in a March 20 run-off election, respected former first lady Mirlande Manigat, is granted the more formal sobriquet of "Madame Manigat".
The contrast between the brash entertainer and the soft-spoken opposition matriarch means the final stage of what has been a tumultuous presidential campaign in the Western Hemisphere's poorest state will be as much about competing personalities and style as policy proposals.
Although two decades separate 70-year-old grandmother Manigat from her younger rival, both are seen by analysts as right-of-centre candidates who share many similar views on how to put the earthquake- and cholera-ravaged Caribbean nation on the path of recovery.
Here are some of the things that separate, and unite, the candidates vying for Haiti's presidency more than a year after a devastating January 2010 earthquake:
EXPERIENCE, OR CHANGE?
The debate over experience is what most divides the two candidates, who were eventually declared the two front-runners from a chaotic, inconclusive November 28 first round vote that was fraught with vote-rigging allegations and unrest.
Manigat was the top first round vote-getter, but did not gain enough to win outright. She would be Haiti's first elected female president if she wins the run-off on Sunday.
Martelly, 50, is a political neophyte who was propelled into the run-off by a revision of the vote tally from the first round. He says he offers the fresh start that Haiti needs.
"Sweet Mickey", as he is widely known, says the post-quake recovery requires an energetic, courageous leader who can make a clean break with the bad habits of corruption, mismanagement and violence that have plagued Haiti's government for decades. The symbol of his Repons Peyizan party is a muscular bull.
A star of Haiti's catchy Kompa dance music, the charismatic shaven-headed Martelly projects himself as a "man of the people" in tune with a popular clamour for jobs, affordable food, clean water and housing, healthcare and education.
"In this election, you have a choice to make: a choice between a new way of thinking, a new breath and a new team, and a system that has been in place for 30 years," he said in a recent televised debate with Manigat.
She became a senator and first lady in 1988, when her husband Leslie Manigat won the presidency. Both were forced into exile by a coup soon after. Manigat stresses her Sorbonne education and expertise in constitutional law, which she contrasts with Martelly's glitzy showbiz background.
"You don't lead a country with your feet. You lead a country with your head and your heart," she says, in reply to critics' suggestions that she may be too old to spur Haiti into tackling its huge developmental challenges, a cholera epidemic and the task of rebuilding after the 2010 earthquake.
Manigat, who wears her silvery hair in a bun, has echoed questions about whether her rival has the gravitas to be president. His more outlandish antics as an entertainer have included donning diapers, wigs and even stripping in public.
Outside formal events where he wears suit and tie, he often leads his supporters in rallies and marches in the streets. He has an enthusiastic youth following, boosted by support from fellow musician and Haitian-American hip-hop star Wyclef Jean.
RECONSTRUCTION, AID AND DEVELOPMENT
Both candidates agree that Haiti needs significant foreign aid as well as local and foreign investment to rebuild its capital, revive the economy and house hundreds of thousands of homeless quake survivors. They also argue for decentralization so that funds can be more equally spread across the country.
Martelly and Manigat have faulted delays in post-quake recovery efforts, specifically by the Interim Haiti Recovery Commission (IHRC) co-chaired by former U.S. President Bill Clinton and Haitian Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive.
"The commission can play a great role, but we have realized there is slowness and there is some disorder," Martelly said.
He and Manigat say Haitian interests risk being put aside in a rebuilding process where donors have such a big role, and that Haiti must shake off its long dependency on foreign aid.
Martelly advocates investment in tourism, while Manigat has education as a centerpiece of her platform and both call for modernization in agriculture, along with updated land records.
SECURITY, U.N. PEACEKEEPING
While the presence of a more than 12,000-strong U.N. force in Haiti is a sensitive subject -- critics talk of "occupation" and accuse U.N. peacekeepers of bringing cholera to Haiti -- neither of them is pressing for an immediate withdrawal.
Manigat says there would be serious security problems if the U.N. force had to leave now, although she adds there should be a plan for a progressive departure of the blue helmets, and their replacement by a Haitian security force.
Martelly goes further in saying that Haiti needs to have its own army, meaning the restoration of an institution disbanded in the mid-1990s by then President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, previously ousted in a military coup.
The subject is controversial as many remember the army as an abusive ally of past dictators and of a wealthy political and business elite. Aristide says he intends to return from exile, increasing worries about instability.
Manigat and Martelly say they want to closely involve the Haitian diaspora in the country's reconstruction, with Manigat advocating a constitutional change that would allow exiles to have double nationality, vote and hold political office.

Scarlett Johnson might be the hollywood next celebrity to visit Haiti .

At the 83rd Academy Awards Scarlett Johansson was spotted flirting with a host of A-list stars including dad-of-two Matthew McConaughey as well as Hurt Locker actor Jeremy Renner, however it appears her amorous behaviour was just a rouse to hide her real relationship with actor Sean Penn. Despite the 24 year age gap a source suggested Scarlett has fallen “head over heels” with the fellow actor who reportedly whisked her away on a romantic holiday to the exclusive Las Ventanas resort in Mexico. “They were last seen at the resort’s spa bar, drinking margaritas, talking and smoking,” revealed an eyewitness. “When they finished, they left quietly and casually, but also hand in hand.” The vacation comes just days after the couple were spotted enjoying various cosy dinner dates together. At one particularly lunch date in a Los Angeles dinner ScarJo, who was once allegedly involved in a love in an elevator incident with Benicio Del Toro, spent the entire meal with her foot on Sean’s lap. A source spilled, “She thinks Sean is amazing. He’s exactly the kind of guy she wants.” Adding, “She doesn’t care about the age difference. In fact, that’s what makes him so attractive.” Although both actors deny allegations of a romance their trip to Mexico seems to prove they are more than just friends, and recent claims that ScarJo plans to join Sean on his humanitarian trip to Haiti further fuel theories that they’re an item. Their main common interest is charity work with the Lost In Translation actress working as a global ambassador for Oxfam while Sean is launching the J/P Haitian Relief Organisation after the country’s catastrophic earthquake. And it’s believed that the former bad boy’s kind hearted nature is what appeals to the 26-year-old beauty – “They are reportedly planning to head to Haiti together in the spring, and Scarlett doesn’t care about the age difference because she was sick of being with someone who’s childish.” “Scarlett first reached out to Sean when she was planning to visit Haiti with Oxfam. She knew Sean was living there in a tent and turned to him for advice,” explained an insider. “While the actress didn’t end up going on the trip, she did develop feelings for Penn who split from wife Robin Wright after 14 years of marriage last August.” A further source added to rumours of a burgeoning romance stating, “The duo began their fling in early January when she was staying at LA’s Chateau Marmont while filming We Bought a Zoo with Matt Damon. Their first hook-up was in Scarlett’s Bungalow. Scarlett’s smitten with him.”

Keep an eye out for scams as you donate to tsunami relief

Reporter: Jessie Rymers

Indiana's attorney general is reminding people to keep an eye out for scams as they reach out to help those affected by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

"In the immediate aftermath of the Haiti earthquake last year, Hoosiers reached deep into their wallets to donate and help the victims. But in that outpouring, there were concerns about new and untested relief groups suddenly appearing and soliciting donations online and by email," said Attorney General Greg Zoeller on Friday.

During disasters you should make sure you're donating to reputable organizations, such as The Red Cross. Other groups will often try to take advantage of sympathetic people and trick them into making donations to fictitious organizations.

To make sure you are not scammed, you should look into the background of the organization you are thinking about donating to. You should never respond to phone calls or emails soliciting donations. You should be the one to reach out to the organization.

To help you make that distinction, the attorney general recommends the website Charity Navigator. At the site, you can check whether a charity uses donations for intended purposes.

If you would like to make a donation to The Red Cross, you can do so by texting "REDCROSS" to 90999, to make a $10 donation.

Supernatural Misha Collins tease Castiel Centric episode , plans trip to Haiti with fans

ot an in-depth look at Jimmy Novak, the man whose body now houses Castiel (Misha Collins), but we have very little insight into Castiel himself when it comes to backstory. During the current sixth season, much of Castiel's story has played out off-screen as he soldiers on in Heaven's brutal civil war.

In Episode 20, however, Castiel gets his moment. Showrunner Sera Gamble describes it as a serious episode with a "significant impact." She tells Zap2it, "It's an episode that's largely from Castiel's point of view. We get pretty deep into what he's feeling, and we illuminate his character quite a bit."

"It was terrible!" Collins jokes. "I had to work every day! That's not what I signed up for! It's actually kind of tough being the heaviest character in an episode."  He promises that we'll find out just what Castiel has been up to while he hasn't been saving the Winchesters from their various pickles.

"It's a big expositional episode about the whole war in heaven and Cas's relationship with that and Cas's whole inner story and the dilemmas that he's faced with," Collins says. Castiel will find himself confiding in someone -- we're not sure who, but our money's on Dean, given their profound bond.

The episode will incorporate not only news of Castiel's current embattled situation, but we'll learn a lot about his back story -- and even, perhaps, about his childhood, inasmuch as an angel can have a childhood.

Titled "The Man Who Would Be King," the Castiel-centric episode will see the return of a familiar face from the hunters' past. It's both written and directed by executive producerBen Edlund, who "Supernatural" fans tend to, well, worship, for lack of a better word.

Collins certainly appreciated having a friend of the show on set during his most trying episode yet. "You have a director who knows the whole arc of the character and who can really talk to you about what's going on with your character," he says. "A lot of times directors are more like guest stars. There are several directors we have who really know the story well, but a lot are not as versed."

As a longtime part of the "Supernatural" family, Edlund was the subject of some affectionate ribbing during the PaleyFest panel discussion. As it was his first time directing, he paid excruciating attention to detail -- perhaps to a fault, as Jared Padalecki joked.

"It was nice to have the passion," Padalecki says. "I'll say that, and then I'll make fun of him." He makes teases Edlund good-naturedly. "A lot of directors will come in - not with a lack of love - but they're like, 'Okay everybody, you go there, you go there, I need you to hit this  mark.' And that's what I do. I hit that mark if you need me to hit it, in five minutes or five seconds. And [Edlund], god love him, would be like 'Jared, I want you to walk to this mark, and while you're walking you should think about how tough it's been. And maybe you hesitate for a second, because it's really hard, and you love your brother,' and I was like... 'You can just tell me to go somewhere.'"

At one point during the discussion, panel moderator Mo Ryan asked our stars if they had any regrets about the decisions they'd made on the show.

"I've got one," Collins says. "In the first episode that Castiel shows up, he's trying to communicate with dean, and in so doing, his angelic voice is exploding television sets and breaking windows. So I, consummate guest star that I am, I think, I'm going to do this really deep, growly voice. A kick-ass, window breaking voice." He pauses. "I may be running into medical problems. It has been brutal on my throat, so, yeah. Regret."

The voice Collins used in their first scene together was rather unsettling for Jensen Ackles. Watch our (admittedly shoddy) video of the panel below to see Padalecki and Ackles discuss their initial impressions of Collins, who didn't quite fit in on set when he first arrived in Vancouver.

Now that he's found his place in the "Supernatural" fandom, though, Collins intends to use his power for good... most of the time. He's inviting 40 of his fans (or, as they like to be called, minions) to join him and fellow "Supernatural" star Matt Cohen (he plays young John Winchester) on a week-long trip to Haiti to build a community center for victims of the horrific earthquake.

"Yes, I'm crazy," he laughs, "and I'm also excited. I think it'll be an exciting trip. Fans come to fan conventions and that sort of thing, so I love the idea of trying to utilize some of that energy for something else."

Collins is working on booking a film for the summer, but in the meantime, he's got plenty on his plate to finish up Castiel's Season 6 journey. "You will meet an angel named Rachel who is Castiel's trusted lieutenant," Gamble says. "We're sort of opening up that story a little bit. We'll see more of Raphael and more of the civil war. What's going on with Castiel, and what he's thinking when he gives [the Winchesters] that look that says, 'I really need a nap and I don't have time to take one.'"
